Why Proper Packing Matters
A well-packed parcel is the single most effective way to prevent damage in transit. Packages go through sorting machines, are stacked in vehicles, and travel hundreds or thousands of kilometres. Taking 10 extra minutes to pack correctly can save you the hassle of insurance claims and replacements.
Choosing the Right Box
The box is your first line of defence. Keep these principles in mind:
- Use a new, corrugated cardboard box whenever possible. Used boxes may have weakened walls.
- The box should be slightly larger than the contents to allow for cushioning material on all sides.
- Avoid boxes that are already creased, damp, or torn — they offer less structural protection.
- For heavy items (over 10 kg), use double-walled cardboard.
Cushioning: The Key to Protection
Fill empty space inside the box to prevent items from shifting. Here are the best cushioning options:
- Bubble wrap: Ideal for fragile items like electronics, ceramics, and glassware.
- Foam peanuts / loose fill: Good for odd-shaped items that are hard to wrap.
- Crumpled paper or kraft paper: An eco-friendly option for less fragile goods.
- Air pillows: Lightweight and effective for filling large voids.
A good rule of thumb: wrap each item individually and aim for at least 5 cm of cushioning on all sides, including the top and bottom.
Sealing the Box
- Use strong packing tape (at least 48 mm wide) — never use masking tape or regular Sellotape.
- Apply tape along all seams using the H-taping method: seal the centre seam and both edges of the top and bottom flaps.
- Add an extra strip of tape over the label to protect it from moisture.
Labelling Your Parcel
Poor labelling is a leading cause of lost parcels. Follow these steps:
- Print labels clearly — avoid handwriting if possible.
- Include the full destination address with postcode and country.
- Add your return address on the outside of the box.
- Place the label on the largest flat surface of the box, not on a seam or edge.
- If re-using a box, remove or black out all old labels and barcodes.
Special Items: What to Know
| Item Type | Packaging Tip |
|---|---|
| Electronics | Use original packaging where possible; add foam inserts |
| Liquids | Double-bag in sealed plastic, then cushion heavily |
| Fragile ceramics | Wrap each piece individually with bubble wrap; mark box "FRAGILE" |
| Clothing/soft goods | Polybag to protect from moisture; a padded mailer may be sufficient |
| Books/documents | Use a rigid cardboard envelope or book mailer |
